Three of us from Mosman Reconciliation attended last night’s forum – with our thanks to you and to St Ignatius’ College for the welcome and hospitality. We’ll tell our colleagues about it when we attend the annual meeting in Mosman

I particularly enjoyed seeing Back to Bourke and after the forum we were able to speak to Kir and to Geraldine.

I forgot to say congrats to everyone concerned with the Storylines Festival. Sorry I'm missing it.

Many congratulations to you both on a terrific night, we both enjoyed it immensely, the artwork, the African drumming and the indigenous dancing. When we went into the chapel thoughts came back to me of the Arts of Islam exhibition at Gallery NSW a year or so back, it is so good to see Islamic culture brought in such a positive light

I absolutely loved the plays I saw last week, and can't speak highly enough of the work you have done in bringing this all together. I found both Cyril's work and A Land Beyond the River very moving, profoundly in fact.

Congratulations on wonderful work that will reverberate with audiences for a very long time.

The Drama in the O'Kelly this week is a must-see event. Excellent scripts, direction and acting. Cyril Johnson, Alex Jalloh, Elijah Williams and Harry Flitcroft are fantastic.

You get one dance item by Cyril Johnson and 2 plays. The first play is directed by Suzanne Mlar and features our current students with some adults, and the second features 3 professionals. The second play each night is A Modest Ozzie Cosie. This piece is sensational and the lady who plays the costume designer is outstanding!

Excellent acting all-round from Jarrod Crellin, Chloe Dunn and Jacqui Livingstone.

Congratulations to Suzanne Millar and her team for putting this all together.

Congratulations! Loved the show last Friday. Outstanding direction, script and cast!! That lady in the last play is an amazing actor. What is her name? I thought Cyril, Harry and Elijah were also outstanding.

- I've been telling everyone about the plays, all of them. Who did the choreo for Cyril's piece? Great role-inversion & you out-Mockingbirded Mockingbird. And Alana's piece was one of the sharpest bits of new play-crafting I've seen in a long time + outstanding performances. All in all, the best of the season.

we are thrilled to have Cyril Johnson perform his original piece "Ngarrapaana - Building Up" the story of his journey from Wilcannia to Riverview, and now onto life at Melbourne University. Performed in the traditional style with didg, clap sticks, dancing and singing, Ngarrapaana uses fire sand and water in its design. Not to be missed.

Cyril is proving to be quite the media star, with interviews with SBS, Koori Radio and ABC radio!

today we installed the digital artwork from Peter Gould (azaan) and Zahrah Habibullah-Williams (souk) in the foyer of the theatre. Peter and Zahrah have put together a quite spectacular display of more than 40 art works. Doors open at 7.00 pm for pre-show viewing.

on tuesday 24th November 130 year 9 girls from a local school will attend the performances in the theatre. following this they will view the art work on display, then meet with Zahrah and a friend - a Muslim fashion designer - for discussion groups.

the rain stopped, the sun shone, and the crowds arrived...
some highlights of the evening:
Sibo, the African drummer, was a crowd favourite, playing for 30 minutes in front of the Chapel. He ended to great applause, and was quickly surrounded by a group of student boarders
Shaia, the Arabic calligrapher, worked without stop for an hour, sitting in Dalton chapel, to the right of the alter. His beautiful work was admired by all, and he fielded numerous questions
Zahrah Habibullah-Williams' art work, some of it painted for the exhibition, stood proudly in the Parlour, greeting visitors as they entered. There was great interest in her installation 'Feel-ing the Fabric' with its display of silky soft scarves, and the corresponding explanations from the Muslim women who so kindly donated their hijab for their durtion of the festival. Many of the women attended, and happily discussed their personal stories
then, as the sun went down, NAISDA didj players lead the crowd down to the rose gardens, where Rich Neville of Mandylights had programmed a spectacular lighting show. The Elcho dancers were impressive, and the contemporary performers to be admired. But the hit of the night was undoubtedly the SIC dancers, performing for the first time the newly choreographed piece 'Wallabies'

Artist Zahrah Habibullah-Williams has invited her friends, Muslim women from all walks of life, to donate their favourite scarf to the exhibition. These are on display, with their accompanying story: who owns the scarf, why it is a favourite, and why she wears the hijab.

Alana's new play 'Burkini' will feature in the theatre season - O'Kelly theatre November 17 - 28.

Perhaps best know for stage plays Parramatta Girls and Run Rabbit Run (both for Company B, Belvoir Street Theatre) Alana is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2009 AWGIE for Community and Youth Theatre

Most recently Alana's production of her original script 'Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah' the story of two Australian/Afghani Muslim women, ran as a double bill with Alex Buzo's 'Norm and Ahmed'.

“Valentine shows us a world wherein her characters are intelligent, empowered, in touch with their spirituality, and who happen to be Muslim."

6. SHALOM GAMARADA

Shalom Gamarada is a residential scholarship program for Indigenous medical students at the University of NSW.

Its aim is to increase the number of Aboriginal doctors who will then help to improve health outcomes and the quality of life of Indigenous Australians.

Scholarships are funded from proceeds of an Annual Art Exhibition, donations and endowments.

At the start of the programme in 2005 there were only four students in medicine and three of those were in first year. in 2009 there are now 22 students across all six years of the degree with four in first year and ten on shalom Gamarada scholarship.

All profits from this exhibition will go to the scholarship program and be recognised as 'Riverview Gamarada'

7. NAISDA – indigenous performers ‘dance on water’

we will dance on the waters

Senior Developing Artists from NAISDA Dance College will join students of Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview to present a lyrical series of dance performances drawing on the stories of the land where the college is situated.

These stories remind us of our place in the immensity of our History, our Country and our People. It is the moment when we realise that we all stand on the shoulders of those who have walked this land before us – that we share this breath of life with them every day through our relationship with the living landscape of our beautiful country. Our ancestors and their stories continue to influence and shape every aspect of contemporary Indigenous life.

Directed by distinguished Indigenous performer, Jasmine Gulash, the performance will pay homage to the ancestors of this ancient land.

8. ART: Zahrah Habibullah-Williams

from Souk Collective

Explore the intricacies of contemporary Muslim art and examine the common threads of our faith.

As part of the festival launch on November 7th, Zahrah Habibullah-Williams will exhibit art work from her Souk Collective. Included in the exhibition will be work developed for the festival.

Zahrah says:

“The inspiration for the name 'Souk Collective' came from a combination of things: experiencing the Souks of Morocco with their lively colours and people; walking through the majestic halls of the Alhambra in Granada; living with and experiencing different cultures in the Islamic World. Another Inspiration for starting the Souk Collective was so that it could became a vehicle for visually representing my understanding and experience of Islam to the wider world audience...Souk Collective is about bringing tranquillity to your surroundings through the visual and tactile experience…”

Prompted by the school’s commitment to fostering a diverse student population, the Storylines Cultural Festival, running throughout November, will utilise the arts to focus on issues relevant to African Refugee, Muslim and Indigenous communities, taking conversations that are often ping-ponged in areas of academia into the realm of experience.

By means of art exhibitions, workshops, photographic installations and the four major ticketed events outlined below, the festival will explore the ways in which art can foster the transmission and wisdom of cultures, and how experiencing these cultures in exciting and innovative ways can encourage us to question
